About
Off Balance is a performance and video piece developed during an artist residency in Galerie, 102, Berlin in July 2019.
The residency space being a conventional white cube gallery inspired a choreography where the dancer's body is trying to become a wall-based artwork, traditionally seen in such spaces by having a persistent physical contact with the gallery wall and floor.
Simultaneously, a digital copy of the dancer starts to multiply across the wall where a digital video creates another dimension to the room. First mimicking her virtual avatar, the dancer struggles to keep up with the multiplying copies. The physical effort of the exercise becomes evident through the sounds of flesh in contact with the ground and of laboured breathing.
Off Balance is both an exploration of our complex relationships with our digital alter egos as well as a commentary on the rigid demands of the traditional art world where artists working in non-traditional media often struggle to find their place.
